Mary Cantwell RIP

Elm Park lost a valued member of the Tennis Club this week when Mary Cantwell passed away after a short illness. Mary was an active tennis player and supported every event whether with her racquet or her camera. She also golfed and loved her bridge. She was quick to acquaint herself with new members and always had a smile and a few words for people. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family. She will be missed.

  1. I first met Mary, or 'Mustard Mary' as I dubbed her, to distinguish her in a land of Marys, at a Captain's Day tournament very shortly after I joined Elm Park. I was impressed by her organisational ability, ready conviviality and welcoming of recent blow-ins like myself. We had been sent over to Bective, to help manage the overwhelming demand on our own courts (hopefully to be repeated during this year's event :-) ). The round robins progressed well and soon it was lunchtime. From seemingly nowhere and with no apparent planning, Mary produced a massive picnic basket, around which we all congregated. Tardis-like, it then started to produce never-ending streams of crockery, cutlery, napkins, rounds and rounds of assorted sandwiches, thermos flasks of tea and coffee and countless other objects. Any one of attempting, Generation Game-like, the recounting of the articles that issued forth, would have failed quite miserably. The denouement of this colourful procession were the condiments. Teeny weeny salt and pepper pots, and then finally tiny pots of Dalkey mustard. I learned a while later that Mary made the tasty stuff. I've been a fan ever since, and Mary would occasionally treat me to a little pot, if she met me in the car park, as she pulled them out from the, probably cavernous, boot of her car. She'll be much missed but certainly not forgotten.
